What is a Ball-Type Check Valve?
A ball-type check valve is an essential plumbing component widely used in drainage and wastewater (septic) pump systems. Typically installed on the discharge line of the pump, this valve plays a crucial role in ensuring the system operates efficiently and smoothly. It features a Y-shaped design and contains a plastic ball inside.
Working Principle of the Ball-Type Check Valve
When the pump operates and sends pressurized water into the system, the plastic ball inside the check valve moves into the side channel due to the Y-shaped design. This allows the fluid to flow freely and be discharged. However, when the pump stops, the plastic ball returns to the main flow channel due to its own weight, sealing the passage. This movement prevents the pumped wastewater from flowing back into the collection tank or reservoir.
Purpose and Advantages of the Ball-Type Check Valve
If a ball-type check valve is not used, the discharged fluid may flow back into the tank when the pump stops, reducing system efficiency and placing additional load on the pump. This inefficiency forces the pump to operate unnecessarily, increasing energy consumption and causing premature equipment wear.
For these reasons, it is strongly recommended to install at least one ball-type check valve on the pump's discharge line in drainage and wastewater pumping applications. Doing so ensures a long-lasting system, conserves energy, and maintains optimal operational efficiency.
