What is VRV Heating?
VRV heating is a centralized climate control system that allows users to control different zones independently. In Heat Pump VRV systems, all units must operate in heating mode simultaneously, while Heat Recovery (3-Pipe) VRV systems can provide both heating and cooling at the same time.
A VRV system offers heating down to -20°C and cooling up to 50°C. However, air-cooled VRV systems depend on outdoor temperatures, with outdoor unit capacity decreasing when temperatures drop below 0°C. In contrast, water-cooled VRV heating systems are not affected by outdoor conditions and do not require defrosting.
What is the Defrost Process?
Defrosting is a critical function in VRV heating systems. When the outdoor temperature falls below 0°C, frost forms on the condenser coil of the outdoor unit. Sensors detect this frost and switch the system to cooling mode to heat the outdoor unit and eliminate the frost. This process ensures efficient system operation by preventing ice build-up.

Components of a VRV System

- Indoor Units: Placed inside the building and allow individual zone control.
- Copper Pipes: Transport refrigerant throughout the system.
- Smart Control Systems: Provide precise and automated operation.
Air-Source VRV Systems
Air-source VRV systems can provide heating down to -20°C and cooling up to 50°C. They have a typical COP/EER value of around 4.0. Technological advancements in ground-source cooling systems have increased this value to approximately 5.0.
VRV Heating and Defrost Process
VRV heating systems operate effectively when the outdoor temperature is higher than the refrigerant temperature. However, when the outdoor temperature drops below 0°C, moisture on the condenser coil freezes, causing frost. Sensors detect this condition and switch the system to cooling mode to heat the outdoor unit, removing the frost and ensuring continuous heating performance.
