Reverse Osmosis Systems is a process frequently used to remove dissolved components from water. It is most effective in removing inorganic salts, especially sodium chloride. The technology to desalinate seawater using Reverse Osmosis Systems became commercially available in the early 1980s. In many countries, 500 ppm TDS is the maximum acceptable level of TDS in drinking water. By the 1990s, major membrane manufacturers were producing seawater membrane elements capable of producing product water with TDS levels of less than 500 ppm in 1 pass.
Since salt rejection is optimized by more than 99% , improvements have generally focused on using less energy to produce product water. On the membrane side, the membrane elements are now capable of producing product water using approximately 65-70% of the initially required applied pressure. On the equipment side, devices are now available that capture energy from RO reject streams and use the captured to increase the pressure in the system pumps. This recovery of previously lost energy means less pump motor HP is required in the systems.
Other fairly recent developments and improvements include reducing the footprint of systems by producing larger diameter elements and using thicker feed inserts in membrane elements to reduce fouling and make cleaning more effective.
Over a period of time, feed spacers had become narrower to make more room in the elements for additional membrane area. At this time, it is not recommended to use feed spacers less than 30 mils thick in feed waters that are likely to become contaminated and require membrane cleaning.
